The StaViCTA members Andreas Kerren, Carita Paradis and Vasiliki Simaki will co-organize the special session "Natural Language Processing for Social Media Analysis" in the International Conference on Speech and Computer (SPECOM 2017). The call and description of this special session follow:
The exploitation of natural language from social media data is an intriguing task in the fields of text mining and natural language processing (NLP), with plenty of applications in social sciences and social media analytics. In this special session, we call for research papers in the broader field of NLP techniques for social media analysis. The topics of interest include (but are not limited to): sentiment analysis in social media and beyond (e.g., stance identification, sarcasm detection, opinion mining), computational sociolinguistics (e.g., identification of demographic information such as gender, age), and NLP tools for social media mining (e.g., topic modeling for social media data, text categorization and clustering for social media).

Maria Skeppstedt will present our works in the area of computational linguistics at the two workshops Louhi '15 and WASSA '15. Both workshops are held in conjuntion with the EMNLP 2015 conference in Lisbon, Portugal, September 17–21, 2015. The StaViCTA project is represented by our PhD student Kostiantyn Kucher at the 3rd National Workshop on Data Science (SweDS) which is held at BTH, Karlskrona, from September 30 until October 1, 2015. The position is part of the StaViCTA project on advances in the description and explanation of stance in discourse using visual and computational text analytics funded by the framework grant No. 2012-5659 from the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). The research team currently consists of three senior researchers, one postdoc researcher and one doctoral student, whose work will be carried out under the supervision of the three senior researchers.
The candidate should hold a PhD degree in Computational Linguistics (or the equivalent). Candidates who obtained a PhD degree no longer than three years before the final application date will be considered first.
Excellent background and knowledge in machine learning and natural language processing is an advantage. Experience with sentiment/stance analysis is an additional important qualification. Knowledge of semantics in this context is also very important. Good programming skills (Java and/or Python) and a solid training in mathematics and statistics are preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are absolutely essential. Because of the interdisciplinary character of the project, the candidate should be an enthusiastic person who is interested in making sense of large and dynamic text data (such as in blogs) and capable of working both independently and within a group. Teamwork experiences should be documented in the application.
The position is limited to one year full time (there is the possibility to extend the position for further 6 months), and the starting date should be as soon as possible.
