GD 2025 Hosted by iVis Group at LiU in Norrköping
The 33rd International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization (GD 2025) will be held in Norrköping, Sweden from September 24–26, 2025, hosted by iVis group. Prof. Kerren (LiU, LNU) and Dr. Kucher (LiU) will serve as general co-chairs, while Dr. Linhares (LNU) will be involved in organization of the pre-conference PhD school on September 22–23, 2025. The website of the conference is already online at https://graphdrawing.github.io/gd2025/ and will soon be populated with more detailed information.
Featured Article in the May/June 2024 issue of IEEE CG&A
Our paper Visualization for Trust in Machine Learning Revisited: The State of the Field in 2023, co-authored by Dr. Angelos Chatzimparmpas, Dr. Kostiantyn Kucher, and Prof. Andreas Kerren, has been selected as the spotlight article of the CG&A May/June 2024 issue and is free-to-view. The CG&A Editor-in-Chief summarizes our paper as follows: "Their results corroborate the rapidly growing trend of visualization techniques for increasing trust in machine learning models in the past three years, with visualization found to help improve popular model explainability methods and new deep learning architectures. The article is another example of articles discussing the state of the art and identifying challenges for the research community to work on."

EuroVis Best PhD Dissertation Award 2024
Dr. Angelos Chatzimparmpas, former PhD student with the ISOVIS group at Linnaeus University, was awarded the EuroVis Best PhD Dissertation Award 2024 at EuroVis '24 for his dissertation "Visual analytics for Explainable and Trustworthy Machine Learning", which was also previously selected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) 100-list in 2023.

ISOVIS Group at EuroVis 2024
The ISOVIS group members have attended EuroVis '24 in Odense, Denmark during May 27–31, 2024. We and our collaborators have presented a range of contributions (from an invited CGF article to short papers, posters, and workshop papers) and served as chairs for several conference tracks.
STAR Co-chair at EuroVis 2024
Prof. Andreas Kerren will serve as a State-of-the-Art (STAR) track co-chair at EuroVis 2024, which will take place in Odense, Denmark during 27–31 May, 2024.
MIP Award Co-chair at IEEE VISSOFT 2023
Prof. Andreas Kerren will serve as Most Influential Paper (MIP) Award co-chair of the 11th IEEE Working Conference on Software Visualization (VISSOFT 2023), which will take place in Bogotá, Colombia during 01–02 October, 2023.
ISOVIS Group at EuroVis 2023
Prof. Andreas Kerren and Dr. Angelos Chatzimparmpas represented the ISOVIS Group at EuroVis 2023 in Leipzig, Germany during June 12–16, 2023.
Zeyang Huang and Dr. Kucher (with Prof. Kerren among the co-authors) presented a STAR (survey article) titled "VA + Embeddings STAR: A State-of-the-Art Report on the Use of Embeddings in Visual Analytics"; and Dr. Angelos Chatzimparmpas (with Prof. Kerren among the co-authors) presented an invited CGF article titled "HardVis: Visual Analytics to Handle Instance Hardness Using Undersampling and Oversampling Techniques".
Additionally, Dr. Stef van den Elzen (with Dr. Rafael Martins among the co-authors) presented an invited IEEE CG&A article titled "The Flow of Trust: A Visualization Framework to Externalize, Explore, and Explain Trust in ML Applications".

VA+Embeddings Browser, our visual survey of the use of embedding approaches in visual analytics, is now publicly available online:
The respective survey article (state-of-the-art report) will be presented at the STAR track of EuroVis 2023.
ISOVIS Group at IEEE PacificVis 2023
Prof. Andreas Kerren, Dr. Angelos Chatzimparmpas, Dr. Ilir Jusufi, and Daniel Witschard represented the ISOVIS Group at IEEE PacificVis 2023 in Seoul, Korea during April 18–21, 2023.
Prof. Kerren gave an invited talk at the VisMeetsAI '23 workshop (see the previous news item).
Daniel Witschard (with Dr. Jusufi, Dr. Kostiantyn Kucher, and Prof. Kerren among the co-authors) presented a short paper (the "Visualization Notes" track at PacificVis) titled "Optimizing Embedding-based Network Reconstruction"; and Dr. Chatzimparmpas (with Prof. Kerren among the co-authors) presented a short paper titled "MetaStackVis: Visually-Assisted Performance Evaluation of Metamodels".

Angelos Chatzimparmpas (with Dr. Rafael M. Martins, Dr. Kostiantyn Kucher, and Prof. Andreas Kerren as co-authors) presented an invited TVCG article titled "FeatureEnVi: Visual Analytics for Feature Engineering Using Stepwise Selection and Semi-Automatic Extraction Approaches" at IEEE VIS 2022 in Oklahoma City, USA during October 16–21, 2022 (hybrid event).
Additionally, Dr. Kostiantyn Kucher has presented (remotely) a workshop paper titled "An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Evaluation and Experimental Design for Visual Text Analytics: Position Paper" at BELIV 2022, and Zeyang Huang (with Dr. Kostiantyn Kucher and Prof. Andreas Kerren as co-authors) contributed a poster paper titled "Towards an Exploratory Visual Analytics System for Multivariate Subnetworks in Social Media Analysis".
Special Issue on Visual Text Analytics
Prof. Andreas Kerren is co-editing a special issue on Visual Text Analytics of the Information Visualization Journal. Paper submission deadline is on January 31 April 30, 2023.
PhD Student's Visit to Arizona State University
Angelos Chatzimparmpas has visited Arizona State University during summer 2022, where he stayed and worked for two months at Prof. Ross Maciejewski's VADER Lab. The trip was financed by Linnaeus University’s strategic mobility fund for doctoral students in 2022 and a honorarium from the Center for Accelerating Operational Efficiency (CAOE) led by Arizona State University.

The thesis is entitled Supporting Data Interaction and Hybrid Asymmetric Collaboration Using Virtual Reality Within the Context of Immersive Analytics. Dagstuhl Seminar 22191 on Visual Text Analytics
Prof. Kerren, Dr. Kucher, and Angelos Chatzimparmpas (as well as some of the ISOVIS group alumni and collaborators) have participated in the Dagstuhl Seminar 22191 on Visual Text Analytics (with Prof. Kerren being one of the organizers). This Dagstuhl Seminar brought together researchers from the visualization, natural language processing (NLP), and machine learning communities, with domain experts from several text-related research areas, to identify the most pressing and promising open problems for collaborative research.

Angelos Chatzimparmpas has recently added a large number of new entries to TrustMLVis Browser, our visual survey in enhancing trust in Machine Learning (ML) models with visualization. 2021 was an excellent year for XAI with the use of visualization, and we hope to witness even more novel and interesting work in 2022 (with the respective updates for our survey browser in the future)! BioVis Explorer Presented at the Research Showcase Seminar at Indiana University
Prof. Kerren and Dr. Kucher have presented the work on "BioVis Explorer: A Visual Guide for Biological Data Visualization Techniques" (conducted in collaboration with Prof. Schreiber and Dr. Li) at the research showcase seminar at the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center, Indiana University today (online).

Dr. Kostiantyn Kucher has given an invited talk titled "A Gentle Introduction to Information Visualization and Visual Analytics: Theory and Tools" as part of the BoMoCult Lecture Series in Data Visualization for the Borders, Mobilities and Cultural Encounters (BoMoCult) research community at University of Eastern Finland (UEF) today.
ISOVIS Group at SweDS21
As previously announced, the members of the ISOVIS group took part in organizing SweDS 2021, the 9th Swedish Workshop on Data Science, which took place online on December 2–3, 2021, with Dr. Rafael M. Martins as one of the general chairs. The program of the workshop included 9 accepted full paper presentations and 11 extended abstract presentations, with several contributions from the ISOVIS group in both tracks. InfraVis National Research Infrastructure
We are glad to announce that the Swedish Researh Council (Vetenskapsrådet) has accepted the proposal for a new national infrastructure for visualization and analysis of scientific data, titled InfraVis. Linnaeus University is one of nine Swedish higher education institutions that participate in this infrastructure project. At LNU, InfraVis will be coordinated by Prof. Dr. Andreas Kerren, according to whom, InfraVis will provide all researchers at Linnaeus University access to expertise and a wide range of techniques for analysis and visualization. ISOVIS researchers will contribute to InfraVis with their expertise in information visualization and visual analytics.

Best Short Paper Award at VINCI 2021
Our short paper "Visual Analysis of Industrial Multivariate Time Series" by the ISOVIS group members Angelos Chatzimparmpas and Dr. Ilir Jusufi and our student Maath Musleh has received the Best Short Paper Award at VINCI 2021, the 14th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction held online during September 6–7, 2021 due to the COVID-19 situation (originally planned to take place in Potsdam, Germany).

The members of the ISOVIS group are taking part in organizing SweDS 2021, the 9th Swedish Workshop on Data Science, which is hosted online by Linnaeus University on December 2–3, 2021. Dr. Rafael M. Dr. Kostiantyn Kucher (with Dr. Rafael M. Martins and Prof. Andreas Kerren as co-authors) presented an education paper titled "Project in Visualization and Data Analysis: Experiences in Designing and Coordinating the Course" at Eurographics 2021 held online during May 3–7, 2021 due to the COVID-19 situation (originally planned to take place in Vienna, Austria). This education paper is based on the experiences related to the course 4DV807 Project In Visualization and Data Analysis which has recently been offered for the first time at LNU.

According to the recent data from Wiley, our survey article The State of the Art in Sentiment Visualization was the most downloaded Computer Graphics Forum publication at Wiley Online Library in 2019!
ISOVIS Group at EuroVis 2020
Angelos Chatzimparmpas (assisted by his co-authors Prof. Fabrice Rossi, Prof. Andreas Kerren, and Dr. Kostiantyn Kucher for the Q&A session) presented a survey article titled "The State of the Art in Enhancing Trust in Machine Learning Models with the Use of Visualizations" at EGEV2020, the joint Eurographics & Eurovis conferences held online during May 25–29, 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation (originally planned to take place in Norrköping, Sweden).
Additionally, several further publications co-authored by our group members were presented. Elio Ventocilla presented a paper titled "Progressive Multidimensional Projections: A Process Model based on Vector Quantization" (with Dr. Rafael M. Martins as one of the co-authors), and Mateus Espadoto presented a TVCG article titled "Towards a Quantitative Survey of Dimension Reduction Techniques" (with Dr. Rafael M.
